General Policies
Circulation Policy: Students may check out up to three (3) books at a time for a period of two (2) weeks. DVDs, magazines, and reference materials do not circulate.
Fines: No fines are assessed for overdue books; however, students may not check out additional books until overdue books are returned. If a book becomes lost or damaged, the student will receive an invoice for the replacement cost of the book(s).
Donations: The J-WMS Library Media Center welcomes donations of quality books and materials to support its General Collection. The Library Media Specialist will evaluate each item to determine its appropriateness for the collection, using established criteria. Donors will receive a written record of their donation, and may indicate if it is offered "In Honor" or "In Memory of" someone. Click here to see the Selection Process.
The Selection Process – Overview
All of the materials in the J-WMS LMC have been acquired through one of two means:
1.) A formal selection process, in which materials are evaluated and purchased to support a rich and diverse collection; or
2.) Donations from colleagues, parents, or members of the community.
The Selection Process applies to items purchased via Option 1 above, and is used to review items donated via Option 2 above to determine their inclusion in the LMC collection(s).
Selection Criteria
All materials purchased for the LMC collection with library funds are selected using the following criteria:
1. Accuracy – The information is factual, timely, current, and relatively free from bias.
2. Authority – The reputation of the author and/or publisher for quality materials gives a work a stronger starting point for consideration.
3. Relevance to Curriculum – The material ties into school curriculum, Virginia SOL areas, local interest, or encourages a love of reading.
4. Appropriateness to Users – Meets the following points:
A. It’s an appropriate reading level.
B. Meets student interest level.
C. Matches student’s intellectual level.
D. Matches student’s emotional level.
5. Scope – Consider the following questions:
A. How much time does our curriculum devote to the topic (nonfiction)?
B. How in-depth and varied a collection on a particular topic is necessary?
6. Literary Merit – The material contains quality writing, illustrations, and/or construction.
7. Value to the Collection – The inclusion of this material makes the entire collection stronger.
